From the book ITEMS: Is Fashion Modern? by Antonelli et al. “Jeans are a fashion paradox. At once universal and highly personal, they reflect our anxiety about both fitting in and standing out. Levi’s Strauss & Co.’s 501 jeans are the most famous and most popular. They hark back to 1873, but received a boost of glamour from the Hollywood cowboy movies of the 1920s and 1930s, and as the garment’s silhouette became more streamlined, women began wearing them too. An estimated 1.2 billion pairs of jeans were sold worldwide in 2016. It takes a little over a thousand gallons of water to produce a single pair, and the life cycle of a pair of jeans emits more than 73 pounds of carbon, while the runoff from dyeing and finishing chemicals has polluted countless bodies of water. In response, Levi’s has brought its 501s full circle, aiming to cultivate a “consumer who values durability and demonstrates a real attachment to an object.” Levi’s is trying to encourage their costumers to be conscious that when they purchase a pair of jeans, that is not an isolated event.”Vintage 501 Levi’s lookalike from @joop, found at @deruilhoek. Some words from the book Eternal Erasure: On Fashion Matters by Van Bogaert et al. "So is your intention fashion without design? – No, it’s rather design without fashion. Fashion is too focused on aesthetics. Without fashion you would give more attention to the actual garment and think more about the material. The result would be a more functional piece of clothing. Work wear is a good example of design without fashion. But as soon as it becomes fashionable again, it’s out of the game. You can’t look at it anymore as not being fashionable. – What is the aim to design without fashion? Is it a problem that something is fashionable? Or are you afraid that when it becomes a trend it will be over soon and cannot be sustainable? – The problem is that everything is taken over by fashion; it’s lost its meaning. A work wear jacket that becomes fashion is not work wear anymore."Design and quality that will last you a lifetime by @carharttwip, vintage @burberry blouse found at @kilostore_amsterdam, boots @drmartensofficial.
